The Mudejar Style in Teruel and the Way of the Holy Grail

Teruel, Mudejar architecture and the Holy Grail: an international workshop linking heritage, identity and cultural tourism

Teruel is hosting the international workshop ‘Mudejar architecture as a system of identity on the Way of the Holy Grail’: heritage, cultural tourism and a culinary experience for €35

Experts in Mudejar art, cultural tourism and heritage management will gather on 16 April 2026 at the Provincial Museum of Teruel to examine the role of Mudejar art—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—within the Way of the Holy Grail, during a conference that includes a certificate of attendance, a gourmet lunch and a guided tour of the city.

On 16 April 2026, the city of Teruel will become a meeting point for researchers, tourism professionals and heritage enthusiasts with the holding of the International Workshop: “Mudejar architecture as a system of identity on the Way of the Holy Grail”, a unique educational event that brings together art, the local area and cultural tourism.

Organised by the International Association of the Cultural Route of the Holy Grail of Europe, the CCIESG and the Cultural Association of the Holy Grail Route, in collaboration with AIUTA, San Jorge University, the San Valero Group, USJ Senior, Territorio Mudéjar and the Government of Aragon, this event will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Provincial Museum of Teruel, an iconic venue for reflecting on how Mudéjar art, a World Heritage Site, forms part of the cultural landscape that defines The Way of the Holy Grail, the Route of Knowledge, the path of Peace.

More than just an academic conference, this workshop offers a comprehensive cultural tourism experience in Teruel: specialist training, networking among professionals, local cuisine and a guided tour of the city’s Mudejar heritage.

A key international workshop for Teruel’s cultural identity

Mudejar art is one of the defining features of Aragon’s identity, and of Teruel in particular. Its towers, churches and building techniques represent a unique synthesis of cultures that is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This international workshop aims to analyse Mudejar art not only as an artistic style, but as a cultural, territorial and tourism system within the historical route connecting the Mediterranean with Europe via the Way of the Holy Grail.

The event will bring together experts in heritage, architecture, restoration and cultural tourism to reflect on how Mudejar art can become a driving force for sustainable cultural development.

Featured programme: experts in Mudejar heritage and cultural tourism

The workshop will feature a high-calibre academic programme coordinated by specialists in cultural heritage.

Among the most notable speakers are:

Dr Victoria E. Trasobares Ruiz

Director of Territorio Mudéjar

Lecture: “Mudejar art: sustainability and practicality”

A reflection on how Mudejar architecture integrates sustainable construction solutions adapted to the local environment.

Mr José María Sanz Zaragoza

Co-head of Mudejar restoration in the city of Teruel

Lecture: “Unity and variety in Mudejar art”

The conference will be coordinated by:

  • Dr Carlos Buil Guallar, lecturer at the School of Architecture and Technology and director of the University of the Third Age at San Jorge University.
  • Dr Ana Mafé García, president of El Camino del Santo Grial de Europa.

In addition, the event will feature an institutional presentation on The Way of the Holy Grail as a European cultural tourism project and its connection to Teruel’s heritage.
